Is Gender Equality a Myth?

A situation always flashes across my mind wherein lets say a 22 year old girl who is working in a MNC and earning in five figures. Lets assume a situation that she has been raped and now she is a single mother. With no fault of hers she has become the victim of humilation that this society has subjected her to. If she wishes to get married, i ask you, would people be ready to marry her even on knowing the fact that she was raped? No. This is where gender equality proves to be a myth in the Indian Society.

This blog basically represents issues that have been snagging me since i was a kid. Issues relating to the eqauliy, respect and status of the women today. It makes me think twice that are we really the fairer sex? or are we a sort of a burden on this society? Please feel free to post your views on issues that have been bothering you or if theres something you feel strong about.

Inequality amagst genders can be seen prevalent every where, its inbred, ingraind and it stifles the whole concept of being a girl.
Why is it that you need a half naked woman to sell everything from hand towels to hair gels? is everything in this world related to female attraction?
case studies in advertising show that the decision maker of any household product is a woman, what makes these people think that 'this' woman will look lustfully at another woman?
Why are woman classified in the matrimonial column as fair, convent educated and as an add on earning obscene amount of money.
Why are working woman still needed to cook?
Why are women till date being beaten, abused, raped?
Why is it still a taboo for a woman to give 'galis'?
Why is it that woman if she stands in the middle of the road scratching her private parts be looked on as a turn on?
I'l wait for the day when men wil be gang rapped and tortured, the day when they will have to sleep with their bosses for that promotion.
If somebody will answer these questions for me.. may be I'll get answered for all women I grew up with

Megha,
I totally agree with what you commented. I mean thats precisely my point. But let me tell you, gang raping a man is not the solution. I mean i remember telling this guy that all girls should get together and rape a guy, then only he will understand. And this guy was like... WOW!! SO u can see how men take it as. They do not have the slightest idea of what a women goes through since the time she is born. I wish there was some sort of a vaccination which could be given to the male folk and which would help them understand things better.

well spriha..trust me I'm form a woman's college..the reply that you got from a guy will not be the same if he gets gang rapped by bulky, ugly, hard nosed women..its not to do only with the deed but to do with the taboo..there might be thousands of women who get rapped every night by their husbands..isn't it rape on your wedding night when you are expected to go to the neptual bed of a stange man who you know only for a week at most??
Why is it that the woman is made to adjust?why is it that she who leaves behind her family and name?

Seems u ladies are in for some 'male Bashing'. I think the women are quiet liberasted these days, much more than they ever were. Theese evils will take centuries to go away, these evils exists even in western countries ina different form. How would you explain the 'Strip Clubs', women are seen just as objects, an objecty of lust. Things will never change beyond a certain point.

Spriha Srivastava said...

Well Mr Kamikaze...i agree with you that even the women in strip clubs are exploited. But i feel you are kind of contradicting yourself. On one hand you say women are liberated and on the other hand u mention exploitation of women in the strip clubs. This just proves that women today are not liberated completely. Even if they are...its just a small section of the population.

I totally agree to what spriha and megha have mentioned. But we have to acept the fact that our society globally have always treated the women as a weaker sex not because of physical strength but because they are more prone to voilence and abuse by the male. Can any women proudly speak that she has 10 boyfriends and she has slept with all of them. This will bring a stigma on her not only by man but also by woman folk. Tell me honestly would you all be recommending such a girl to come in your family as your daughter-in law or sister-in law...perhaps not..it is not only the man but also woman do not relish the idea of such instances. So why blame the menfolk only. I feel woman are equally important and to be blamed for the gender inequality.
The topic is good to have a discussion forum...but i can assure you all this will be only utopian and cannot sustain in reality

It seems you have taken it for granted Mr Rajesh that since women have been treated "INFERIOR GLOBALLY" it would go on like this. I am sorry but this is not the approach towards solving gender inequality. The examples that u gave out are correct. i agree to them but they are the fruits of the rooted inequality which has been prevalent. As you mentioned in the earlier blog, it is just a MENTAL BLOCKADE. If we are treated equally then let me tell you things would be totally different. This might sound uopian to you at the moment but we are a bunch of optimistic people and our optimism would lead to achievement of utopianism. Cheers!!!

Read this story....a good one for those who are peccimists...

One day I decided to quit... my job, my relationship, my spirituality...I wanted to quit my life. I went to the woods to have one last talk with GOD.
"Lord", I said. "Can you give me one good reason not to quit"
His answer surprised me... "Look around", He said. "Do you see the fern and the bamboo"
"Yes", I replied. "When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I took very good care of
them. I gave them light. I gave them water. The fern quickly grew from the earth. Its brilliant green covered the floor. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the
bamboo. In the second year, the Fern grew more vibrant and plentiful. And again, nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo, he said. In year three, there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit. In year four, again, there was nothing
from the bamboo seed. "I would not quit." He said. Then, in the fifth year, a tiny sprout emerged from the earth. Compared to the fern it was seemingly small and insignificant...But just 6 months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall. It had spent the five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to survive. "I would not give any of my creations a challenge it could not handle." He said to me. "Did you know, my child, that all this time you have been struggling, you have actually been growing roots" "I would not quit on the bamboo. I will never quit on you." Don't compare yourself to others." He said. "The bamboo had a different purpose than the fern. Yet they both make the forest beautiful." "Your time will come", GOD said to me. "You will rise high" "How high should I rise" I asked. "How high will the bamboo rise" He asked in return. "As high as it can" I replied. "Yes." He said, "Give me glory by rising as high as you can." I left the forest to bring back this story. I hope these words can help you see that GOD will never give up on you. Never Give up?! Excellence is what i can reach for,
Perfection is God's business.!?

so this is the Law of Nature...and woman is really the bamboo...dont compare her with the Fern

Well...Who says we are pessimists? Had we been pessimists we would have never been out here debating on this issue. We are all a bunch of optimist people who want a solution to this problem and thus we are trying to discuss this issue from its core.
As for the story, i must say its an inspiring one but then faar too utopian. I am sure here you want to imply that men are ferns and women are bamboo who will take a long time to gain recognition. And this is not the law of society.Infact i feel its the other way around. Women should be compared to the ferns who are quick at the same time in realn sense an all rounder yet they are trampled down upon like how the fern is done.

Hi Spriha,
Had a quick run around on your blog. Just felt like saying this," If you walk in to a room showing you are weak, you would be exploited otherwise not(mostly) isn't it"
Never ever expect that all men would ever support women. Also there are men folk as well, very well tortured by women, not necessarily physically. But men never say it aloud, do they?
Megha says"a half naked women is needed to sell towels to hair gels"
Aren't they women who agree to do so?

I really wouldnt give a shit as to whether she is raped or is a virgin but yes i might have a problem with the kid as she is not mine. And come on the society isnt that bad it depends on whether you look at the glass as half full or half empty.
Btw,u are one of the few feminists who write sense, not give some arbit expletives to men.
I wanna discuss abt this feminism thingie, buzz me if u want maruti_cse on yahoo.

Dint read all the comments but glanced that one of the solutions is
"Gang raping a guy"
Height of stupidity and something which makes me detest such kind of so-called feminists

"Only when i can proudly walk on the streets without having anyone to look at me with eyes of greed can i say my deep desire is fulfilled."

well spriha...this is something which really needs a lot of dissection. going by what the science has taught us,females are made attractive...to attract males of their species. and males are blessed/cursed (whatever you consider it as) with the sex harmones which make sure this happens.

if you have to walk on streets without attracting anyone...either you have to be terribly ugly, or all the men should disappear from earth! i am sure you wont be happy if you are given these choices.

effectively speaking..to fulfill your deepest desire, you have to wait for a time when natural evolution will enable individual specific attraction between male and female(rather than species specific which now exists).

and megha...what is your idea about gender equality??....is it to get the men gang raped and tortured by ugly women??!! or to get the men sleep with their bosses for promotion??!!

lady...you need to have a positive outlook...why not talk about stopping the atrocities on women..rather than hoping that men also recieve the same treatment?? even an extreme feminist will not have any problems with the matrimonial columns or the advertisements...what is it that you want??...half naked men selling hand towels or hair gels?? is this your version of equality??

its true in this 19thcentury where women has achieved great hieghts. still then also there is little lacuna that women are not liberated completely.

I live overseas and one of the many things that cherish and enjoy here the most is my freedom. I totally understand Spriha's comment about "Only when i can proudly walk on the streets without having anyone to look at me with eyes of greed / lust can i say my deep desire is fulfilled." Appreciation is totally different from derogatory. Here men do look but dont stare, they do ask you out in clubs/ public places but also leave if you say no. That is the basic respect everyone deserves.
So what women is asking especially in India is not anything remotly close to utopia but something that can and has been achieved overseas in western society and surely can be done in India as well.
